GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. — A female inmate died Thursday morning after being found unresponsive inside the Glynn County Detention Center, prompting an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

According to the Glynn County Sheriff's Office, the woman was discovered unresponsive during morning rounds on October 1. Detention officers immediately began CPR and emergency medical personnel were called to the jail. First responders continued life-saving measures, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

The Sheriff's Office said the Glynn County Coroner and GBI were immediately notified in accordance with agency policy. The GBI is now leading the investigation into the woman's death.

As of Thursday afternoon, authorities had not publicly identified the woman or announced a preliminary cause of death. There has also been no public determination regarding what happened before she was discovered unresponsive.

Those unanswered questions are important, but conclusions should not be drawn until investigators establish a timeline and the medical findings are available.

The death is likely to receive heightened attention locally, particularly as residents raise questions about conditions and medical care inside the detention center. Comments appearing beneath the Sheriff's Office announcement include allegations from individuals who say their relatives have experienced problems while incarcerated.

A note on what we are not reporting Those claims are separate from Thursday's death and should not be treated as established facts about this case without supporting records or investigative findings. We will report them if and when documents support them.
